The visit to the Porthos construction site in Rotterdam by Federal President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier and King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and, as part of the German President’s State Visit to the Netherlands, confirms the strategic relevance of CCS – Carbon Capture and Storage – in general, and Porthos in particular, in Europe’s path towards industrial decarbonisation.
Porthos is the first large-scale CO₂ transport and storage project of this kind currently being realised in the European Union. The infrastructure is designed to transport the captured CO₂ from industries in the Port of Rotterdam and store it safely in depleted gas fields beneath the North Sea, helping to reduce emissions from hard-to-abate industrial sectors.
Within the project, Bonatti as one of the main contractors is involved in the delivery of the several buildings on the compressor station site, the operational heart of the Porthos system. In this facility the CO₂ collected from the port’s industrial area is compressed before being transported offshore to the depleted gas fields where it will be stored permanently.
The contract awarded to Bonatti includes engineering, procurement, construction and pre-commissioning activities, bringing together integrated capabilities developed over 80 years of service to the energy industry.
“Being part of the delivery of Porthos is a source of great pride and significant responsibility for Bonatti,” said Andrea Colombo, CEO of Bonatti. “The visit of two Heads of State to an infrastructure project under construction clearly reflects the strategic value this project holds for Europe’s industrial and energy future. Bonatti contributes in its own role, as a contractor, by bringing technical, engineering and construction capabilities developed over decades of activity in international markets. This is a concrete contribution to an innovative project with a long-term perspective for the energy transition and for the development of solutions supporting net-zero targets.”
Bonatti’s participation in Porthos confirms the company’s positioning as an industrial contractor capable of contributing to the delivery of strategic infrastructure for the energy transition. In a context where decarbonisation requires not only technologies, but also the ability to turn them into safe, complex and operational facilities, Bonatti brings the value of its experience in the management and construction of major energy projects.
In 2026, Bonatti celebrates 80 years of service to the energy industry: a journey built on construction sites, alongside clients, turning technical expertise and execution capabilities into complex infrastructure. Participation in Porthos represents a natural evolution of this history and confirms the company’s contribution to the development of strategic projects for the energy transition and net-zero targets.
About Porthos
Porthos (Port of Rotterdam CO₂ Transport Hub and Offshore Storage) is a joint venture of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, EBN and Gasunie. The project consists of an infrastructure for the transport and permanent offshore storage of CO₂ from industry in the Port of Rotterdam. Captured CO₂ will be transported via a collective pipeline system to the compressors where it is pressurised for onward transport to and safe storage in depleted gas fields more than 3 km below the North Sea. Porthos supports industrial decarbonisation and contributes to achieving Dutch and European climate objectives. According to the project’s updated schedule, Porthos is expected to become operational no earlier than the second half of 2027.
